“I had the privilege to be among the first generation of Germans who lived for 80 years in peace.”
– Wim Wenders, in an interview with The New York Times
In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, the Federal Foreign Office is sharing a short film by filmmaker Wim Wenders. The Keys to Freedom takes place at a school in Reims, France – the site of Nazi Germany’s surrender in 1945.
The film reflects on the significance of freedom and its continued relevance in today’s world.
In light of the current conflict in Europe, it highlights that freedom is not inherited.
As Wenders states, “freedom isn’t something we inherit – it’s something we must earn, protect, and share”.
