Wim Wenders to Receive Honorary Award 2026

Palais am Funkturm, Berlin

Wim Wenders will be honored with the Honorary Award for his outstanding services to German cinema at the German Film Award ceremony on May 29 in Berlin.

Florian Gallenberger, President of the German Film Academy and Chair of the Honorary Award jury, explains the choice as follows:
“Wim Wenders is an absolutely unique filmmaker and has been an icon of world cinema for over five decades. During this time, he has made German films, European films, and American films, and most recently even a Japanese one. He has made feature films as well as documentaries, he has brought into being some of the greatest soundtracks of all time, won virtually every festival, and worked with the biggest stars both in front of and behind the camera.

But above all, he has enriched millions of people in the most wonderful way possible by repeatedly showing us that the true secrets of life are to be discovered beyond the surface of profane reality. With his films, he has given us a view of the world, of people, and of art that is without equal and that, without any trace of kitsch, still offers hope—because again and again he succeeds in capturing the inexplicable magic and the fragile beauty of life for a moment and making it tangible for his audience. This applies to his films, to his photography, his books, and somehow also to him as a person. Dear Wim, we thank you for your great art and are delighted to present you with the Honorary Award of the German Film Award.”
