SUMMER IN THE CITY is Wim Wenders’ debut feature and graduation film, shot in 1970 while he was still a student at the University of Television and Film in Munich. The film already explores themes that would become central to the director’s now six-decade-long career. In this genre-blending odyssey, the main character, played by Hanns Zischler, wanders aimlessly to the rhythm of a rock soundtrack. The film was shot in stark black and white on 16mm by cinematographer Robby Müller, with whom Wenders would later collaborate on some of his most renowned works, including ALICE IN THE CITIES and PARIS, TEXAS.For the restoration, the original 16mm print was scanned in 4K, sound and image were repaired and the film was finally color-graded under Wim Wenders’ supervision.
