THE BLUES PROJECT
images and notes by Wim Wenders from the location scout in Mississippi and Chicago.

MISSISSIPPI

The BLUE FRONT CAFE is a juke joint in Bentonia, a tiny little town between Jackson and Yazoo City. Skip James was born and raised on a nearby plantation. We were looking here for traces of his life and for people who would remember him.

One of those share-cropper's shot-gun shacks, of which we need several for our film. Maybe this was the one.

MAXWELL SREET, CHICAGO

In Chicago, we also witnessed the sad and brutal destruction of Maxwell Street, a great place that played a formidable part in the history of the Blues.

Chicago was the second leg of our location survey. Some of the places we were looking for, were about to disappear. Like the King Edward hotel, where many blues musicians stayed and some early recordings happened.
