WIM WENDERS: My favorite CD's these days
NICK
CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS "No
More Shall We Part"
I know all of Nick's work, and I liked him a lot, from his very
beginnings. But with this recording, he really delivered a masterpiece.
Very emotional, haunting, beautiful songs. He's one of the few
great contemporary poets and songwriters. There is a special
edition with a second CD that contains 2 more tracks. Really
worth the trouble finding.
SAM PHILLIPS "Fan Dance"
Sorry, folks, this one is not out yet. But will come out soon.
I just had the privilege to get a copy already. I have been
an admirer of Sam's songs for years. (She appeared in "End
of Violence" with the song "Animals on Wheels")
This album is outstanding. Great production by T-Bone Burnett.
Comes out in July.
COWBOY JUNKIES "Open"
You might say they always sound the same and they always play
the same song. I'm glad they do. I still just can't get enough
of Margo Timmins' voice. Anyway, this is a great record.
U2 "All That You Can't Leave Behind"
Still listening to this one a lot. It keeps growing. Especially
since I saw the "Elevation" concert. Way up there
among the very best Rock'n Roll shows I ever witnessed.
SKIP JAMES "Blues from the Delta" (Vanguard
79517-2)
75 minutes of beautifully restored music by my favourite blues
singer. Skip never sounded that good.
In the classical department: I'm listening to Bach all the time,
and have a huge variety of recordings. But the most beautiful
version of the Cantatas comes from Japan, in my book. It is
a series of many Cds by a choir called "Bach Collegium
Japan" directed by Masaaki Suzuki. They eventually want
to record ALL of the cantatas, over the next 10 years. I hope
they succeed. These recordings are extraordinary.
I just bought an obscure "official bootleg" that came
out in Japan, on a small label associated to SONY music, "Bob
Dylan Live 1961-2000". Many amazing unreleased tracks.
I heard that this is a limited edition. Hurry up. (SME records
