AFRICOLA

March 27, Devon, England

THE POOL
The pool used for the Africola shoot is considered to be the best of it's kind in Europe and has been used for underwater filming and photography ever since the company who originally built it transferred their activities to the US. They had been using the 30 feet wide and 30 feet deep pool as a testing ground for under water cameras.

MARK VALENTINE
Mark Valentine, who is widely considered to be one of the best underwater camera men worldwide, assembled his crew for the filming of the underwater scenes for the Africola commercial. He always works with his wife and his credits include 'The Beach', 'Trainspotting' and several James Bond films, among others.

JENNIFER UNDER WATER
In order to find the perfect girl for the underwater scenes Wim Wenders conducted castings in three cities: London, Paris and Rotterdam. What made that process difficult is the fact that the appearance of the potential candidates changed under water and that the part called for someone who could dive efficiently, feel comfortable under water and move well and naturally. Eventually the part went to Jennifer from South Africa, who was cast in London. She received some diving lessons before the shoot and proceeded to be under water for 5 hours .

THE BUBBLES
In Hamburg the main objective was to film the individual pieces which would eventually be integrated into the 'cola bubbles' after the viewer starts their journey into the Africola bottle. Casting for the shoot took place in Hamburg and Berlin. Franz Lustig, who already had contributed to the overall look of the shoot in Devon and created the underwater-cone-of-light was the director of photography at the shoot. The filming of the 'bubbles' had to finished in a very short time and preparation and streamlining of the productions proved to be crucial in order to finish about a dozen short clips in one day. Those clips were later integrated into the bubbles via computer at Das Werk AG in Munich.
